How to speed up your computer by increasing more RAM?
If
you are thinking of spending a few dollars to improve the performance
of your PC, you are probably wondering what is the best investment to
make.
In most cases, apart from adding an SSD ( Best SSD ) ,
increasing the RAM will allow you to speed up your computer more than
any other solution you can find.
Because? Because Microsoft Windows and most popular applications consume a lot of resources.
By
starting two or three programs at the same time, Windows is forced to
perform a constant swapping activity to process data between the RAM and
the hard disk, which often makes the computer really slow. Increasing
RAM means limiting swapping and, therefore, speeding up system
performance.
Luckily for us, increasing RAM is one of the easiest
and fastest DIY operations to do, so easy it's practically within
everyone's reach. That said, here are some things to consider before
buying additional RAM for your PC:
1, Make sure you buy the correct memory module, many newer computers use DDR4 or DDR3 RAM modules;
If
you have an older system, which uses a DDR2 module or even a simple DDR
module, it probably doesn't make sense to invest in an upgrade.
A
quick way to find out which type of RAM is used by your computer is to
type the model number of the computer followed by the word "RAM" on
Google and visit some dedicated site, or you can find this information
inside the PC box. .
Important : You will also need to know how
much memory your computer can support at most. I can install 8GB on my
Gateway, but your PC may support more or less. Always keep in mind that
you can only increase the RAM modules up to the maximum allowed.
Another
quick and easy way to find what type of RAM your PC supports is to
visit www.crucial.com and run their “System Scanner” tool. You will find
the corresponding link at the bottom of the page.
This tool is
100% safe and works very well. In addition to advising you which RAM to
buy, the scanner will also tell you how many free slots you have
available. Sometimes there are more than two, but there may be none.
If
your PC doesn't have slots available you will need to remove a couple
of existing RAM and replace them with new ones, so be sure to consider
this when purchasing.
For example, if your PC has 2GB of RAM
installed on two 1GB modules with two empty slots, you will need to
purchase two 4GB modules and install them in the available slots to
increase the total RAM to 10GB.
If your PC has four 1GB modules
for a total of 4GB of RAM and there is no slot available, you will need
to remove two of the existing modules and replace them with 4GB drives.
This will still allow you to reach a total RAM of 10GB, as you will have
removed the existing 2GB to install the new modules.
2 –Be sure
to install the memory modules in pairs. While on most computers it is
often possible to add a single module, adding two or four at a time will
allow the system to run faster and reduce minor hitches.
3 -
Purchase a RAM with the same specifications as the modules you have
already installed, with particular attention to the nominal speed.
Mixing RAM modules with different specifications often causes system
stability problems.
If the memory you want to install is faster
than your PC's system memory, consider removing all old memory modules
and replacing them with new ones, especially if the motherboard can
support higher speeds. In the long run, you'll be glad you did.
4
- Even some older computers can benefit from a RAM upgrade, although
you may not find compatible modules in major electronics stores. In this
case, don't despair - you have a good chance of finding what you need
on eBay or Craigslist.
5 –If you don't feel safe getting into the
components of your PC you can always ask your expert neighbor (most
likely a super tech teenager) for help to install your new memory.
Alternatively, you can have this done at your nearest computer shop or major specialized centers.
If,
on the other hand, you have decided to install the new RAM modules
yourself, here are a couple of videos that will explain step by step how
to do it.
If you have a laptop:
In any case, keep in mind
that some laptop models do not have a removable lid above the RAM
slots, which means that, to access them, you will have to disassemble
the case at least partially.
If your laptop falls into this
category it would be best to consider contacting a technician to install
the new RAM modules for you.
Bottom line, a RAM upgrade can often bring a computer to new life, making it faster and reducing problems.
